What to visit
El Refugio del Burrito was established in 2003 and is a subsidiary of The Donkey Sanctuary, UK founded in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE. It is only through her amazing devotion to donkeys and hard work that the Sanctuary grew to the international charity it is today. Over 50 million donkeys and mules exist in the world. Many need care and protection from a life of suffering and neglect, whilst others have a vital role to play in human survival and happiness; they are at the heart of everything we do here at El Refugio del Burrito.
You are welcome to visit us any day of the week. We open all year round from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm. El Refugio del Burrito is only closed to the public on 25th of December and 1st of January every year.
Admission is free, donations are welcome.
Based in Fuente de Piedra, close to the famous Flamingo Lake, we provide a safe haven with wonderful facilities for some of the many donkeys and mules that have faced such a hard life.
Our traditional Spanish cortijo (farm), complete with a charming olive grove and traditional buildings, has been turned into a safe haven for donkeys and mules rescued from across Europe. You can meet our residents and learn all their stories as you walk around the grounds, discovering how we care for them. You can even adopt a donkey at our Visitors' Centre.
This is a perfect way to discover the beauty of the Spanish interior, while enjoying a fun and interesting visit that will also help the donkeys. The nearby Flamingo Lake is famous for the fabulously coloured flamingos that flock to it.
Just a 40-minute drive to the north of Malaga, you will find us situated in the beautiful village of Fuente de Piedra, near Antequera, towards Seville by A92.

Take the junction 132 to Fuente de Piedra and head into the village, turning left next to a big house with palm trees.
Follow the track and take the second left after passing a large house on your right. We are situated at the end of this track.
